Writing Option Survey blog 10

Language use in surveys is very important. the way the questions are set up and the specific anwers which are allowed, all is important when thinking about the delivery of the question and how it will affect the person answering.surveys are helpful to collect all sorts of data from a large group of people. its easiest to make the questions short and the answers generic. you can collect a wide range of information from surveys however the information colleted is limited depending on surveys. the one we are looking at in class is very limited in the information it can get from the person taking it. the answering format is difficult to grasp.researchers face a lot of challenges by creating surveys, first off they need to be understandable. this i think is the hardest part of creating something for others to undestand. most people dont think the same and therefore when you see a word or phrase most minds think of different scenarios, or react to the statement in different ways. and that is why its important to create statements or questions that are some what generic and easy to answer.

I agree with my classmates that the overall format of the survey is obnoxious, strongly agree scaled to strongly disagree is definitely not an easy way of describing your connections and experience with writing. With this survey I would have to say I can understand and strongly agree with most of them. however if this was handed to me before I took 2020 and 3005 I wouldnt understand, and would strongly disagree with many of the questions. for instance I could not define Discourse and therefore wouldnt know how to answer that question. many of the questions are related to things I learned in the classes i took the survey for, is that the point of the survey to see what the students need to learn versus what they already know? it seems hard to distinguish all that from these complex statements and a scale of agreeing. I feel like the questions should be more simple. for instance in the first question, I typically revise my writing multiple times, it state I create drafts, because ultimately thats what its asking. as far as the writing outcomes I agree with what was discussed in class and when i did it by myself, separeted them for what question they ask i came to the same conclusions as we did in class.

for my research project (I'm hoping this is the same as the literature review) I will be doing an ethnographic study of the discourse community and social app Instagram. this will include a combination of short interviews with various members of this community as well as my own personal experience. my research question is finding whether or not it is a discourse community even though many individuals do not speak or write in the same language. so in a way it breaks the barriers of language by not needing the same language to be spoken in order to make a connection with someone. there are many instances for me personally and I know a lot of the people I know from instagram will have no problems helping me in answering just a couple of questions about the community. I have decided to narrow it downt to a couple of questions for each person that way i can get a well rounded essay with information from multiple people. this connects to writing studies because we still use a form of writing to communicate. we do this in the form of visual pictures which express what we want to say or communicate to the person. a discourse community is all about language and communicating with the language. instagram has created its own language through pictures. I will start my interviews by asking things like how long have they been part of this community as well as how they feel about being in the community. i will then go into detail about the aspect of the community and how we use language in various ways. I will ask each person how they communicate in the app, especially with people who do not speak their language or are perhaps from a different culture, where one thing means something totally different(like the example i gave with what thumbs up means here and what it means in europe) I will be using a lot from the textbook about Gee but also pulling form Swales article on the aspects of a discourse community in order to begin explaining what makes a discourse community and how instagram fits the description.

research project

Ethnographic study of Instagram app I wish to state the reasons which make the social photography app instagram is a discourse community I will be using discourse analysis and will be interviewing a couple people i know who use the app and using what they say as well as my own experience. probably about 3 or 4 people• These are my questions How would you define this community? How do you feel about being in the community? How does being a member of this community affect your personal life? what are some difficulties/struggles you face within the community? How do you and other members of the community solve the problems you face? How do you communicate with the members of your community? What are the pros and cons of being a member of this community? In what ways do members of the community judge each other? How has the community/communication within the community changed over the years? Which of the ways your community uses to communicate works best? Why? How have changes in the community affected it (in a good or bad way)? What do you see in the future for the community? Terminology used in your field what role do you play in the community? What rules and regulations are enforced in the community? In what ways are those rules subverted? How does your community differ from similar social networking apps?

Our Class, the Community.

Our class is definitely a discourse community for many reasons. I will be borrowing swales influence and definition of a discourse community to state my claim. First we all have a shared set of goals, both in the class and at school in general. These goals include learning as well as bettering ourselves through this knowledge. We all wish to achieve a higher sense of wellbeing and that is why we are being educated. But apart from that we share goal to get through the semester. Secondly we have a shared set of terminology used in the classroom, for instance Discourse and intertextuality. These terms reach far beyond the classroom but as a community we spend time discussing these things. Thirdly we have genres which facilitate our communication and learning. The textbook as well as our blogs and email which help us all communicate. That is what a discourse community is all about communicating and learning together. That’s what we do in school and in our class in particular.

research talk...

The project I am researching is instagram, I have already decided since I didn’t get to analyze the discourse used last semester. This should be fun. What I will do is interviews as well as my own personal history with the app. I will use swales as well as gee to analyze the Discourse of the social app as well as ask certain members who I have become close with, from all different nationalities mind you well one from Germany and one from Philly as well as myself from jersey. what they use the app for and if they consider it to be a community, I of course know they will say yes because we are all like family we support each other and see what each other is doing through artistic nature pictures. It’s a beautiful place. I have found my people there.

Shaggy Dog 2

In a group we researched how intertextuality is present in all of the shaggy dog stories. For this post I will be furthering my investigation of intertextuality and its use in a particular shaggy dog story. I fell intertextuality plays a very big role in the understanding and overall humor of the “joke”. The story I will be analyzing in detail is the string story. I have chosen this for a number of reasons which also help me analyze. This is the only story that does not hold violence to be an important part of the humor. As a whole I noticed all of the shaggy dog stories have an underlying theme of violence within their humor, apart from the string story. This is why I have chosen it, I wish to analyze what creates the humor since it in non-violent, and the answer is of course intertextuality and a play on words. The first indication of intertextuality in this story is the first line; a blank walked into a bar is the most well-known joke line. What’s also funny is that it’s a string, which is not actually alive; this also helps the joke become funny. Personification is a great additive to any joke, it helps stimulate the imagination. Expressions are also a part of intertextuality because they very often are taken from another source. The last line, the unexpected and yet recognizable pun “I’m a frayed knot” which translates when heard to “I’m afraid not” has two meanings. He is crazy with exhaustion and is at wits end, he has become frayed, but it also answers the bar tenders question, after staring at the string he noticed he was the same string to walk in before. This is twofold, not only does it answer the question but it’s a part of the humor as well, how many strings walk into bars anyway? Intertextuality plays a very big part of this story as well as all of the others. The stories derive humor from violent acts and recognizable sayings. The string story is no exception except that it has no violence except exhaustion, and yet the funny part is his exhaustion so in full analysis this story is just as violent as the others. The humor is that we are laughing together at his failings, and being singled out and refused to be served.
